The period in which the primitive settlement took place is unknown. In the 1282 listing, the locality is indicated as a villa, with a population of 20 hearths; in that of 1370 it is still classified as such. It was classified as a castle only in the second half of the fifteenth century, but the walls were almost certainly built earlier because, when in 1443 Ciarpellone, lieutenant of Piccinino, after taking and sacking Piegaro, forcing the inhabitants to emigrate en masse, attacked and he also conquered Macereto, the locality, according to Pellini, was already a castle. In 1444 Pope Eugene IV contributed to its reconstruction not only by declaring extinguished a large debt that the inhabitants, together with those of Piegaro, had contracted with the Curia, but also by exempting them from all taxes for three years. In 1452 the pope Niccolò V also intervened with extensive aid and privileges in favor of the community. We have not been able to find any other news worthy of note. Only in the "Allotment of Governments and Communities of the Papal State with their appodiates" of 1817, is it found that at that date the locality was part of the commune of Piegaro. The churches The ancient parish church, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, with the title of parish church, was located outside the walls, on top of the hill once known as Petroso and certainly corresponding to the toponym S.Angelo. But for the convenience of the faithful, religious services were carried out in the church of St. Peter, located within the walls, currently deconsecrated and reduced to a meeting room for the use of the community. The current parish church, with a single nave, was built in 1909. It has a single altar surmounted by a large oil canvas by the painter Ascani di Paciano, depicting St. Michael the Archangel killing the dragon. Within the limits of the parish there was once the church of S. Maria, belonging to the Confraternity of the Sacrament, that of S. Egidio, owned by the old Sapienza and that of the Madonna delle Grondici. The first two have disappeared, the first destroyed and the second deconsecrated. That of the Grondici instead, restructured and enlarged, has been transformed by the current parish priest Don Nazareno Marchesi into a graceful sanctuary, a constant destination for the faithful, who come from all over the region. Above the main altar is the image of the Madonna and Child between St. Sebastian and St. Rocco painted by Gregorio Tedesco in 1495. On the lower part of the painting is depicted a miracle and the author of the canvas, a certain Fra Matteo.
